Rescuing horses is a solution to a vexing island problem that, to date, no group on the island has tackled. Vieques is home to free range horses, which appears very bucolic in the tourist brochure.

The bedrock Sanctuary programs are focused on rescuing unwanted or injured cats and dogs. Many require veterinary care that is covered by your donations.

The success of the Sanctuary is dependent on a network of volunteers: Animal rescuers, helpers maintaining the property, and feeding and caring for the rescues, veterinarians, foster parents, and transporters from Vieques to the main island to the San Juan Airport.
