About Vieques Island Animal Sanctuary

The founder and current President of the Sanctuary is Wendy Price.  She visited Vieques in 1964 and moved to the island in 1969.

Her love for Vieques led her and several friends to establish a non-profit animal sanctuary in 2014 to care for neglected island dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, chickens, turtles, and doves. Four acres of her family’s property, located in the hills of central Vieques, are now an animal sanctuary. Donations underwrite the care and feeding of the rescue animals.

Today the Sanctuary along with so many others in Puerto Rico are almost recovered from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria, one of the strongest hurricanes on record that passed directly over the island.

Hurricane Maria destroyed our sanctuary. When we knew it was coming, we moved all the animals to concrete buildings, but we had very few kennels to put them in. Fortunately, the shelter manager of Vieques Humane Society, loaned us thirty kennels.

Most of our dogs and cats that lived in large fenced-in shelters before Maria had never been inside a kennel, and some were very fearful to enter.

We didn’t finish until late at night, but all birds, cats, dogs, turtles and horses were saved. This video gives you an idea of the impact on the Sanctuary.

Plans for the future are to continue the recovery from Maria and expand operations to include the neglected island free-ranging horses along with creating habitat for birds and pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and bats.

Please consider making a donation to Vieques Island Animal Sanctuary. Any gift is greatly appreciated, as it helps us to afford medical treatments and food for all our animals.
