Current Programs at Vieques Island Animal Sanctuary

The bedrock Sanctuary programs are focused on rescuing unwanted or injured cats and dogs. Many require veterinary care that is covered by your donations.

Every cat accepted, domestic and feral, is neutered and given love and care for their lifetime. No cat is released back into the streets. Any adoptable cat is given a chance for a forever home. The Sanctuary has been successful in finding forever homes for tripod cats, ones with three legs due to amputations. Future plans call for a cattery at least one acre in size that allows cats to live and interact with each other and with humans.

The dog program focuses on old, sick and injured dogs, mostly Satos, the term for a mixed breed dog of Puerto Rican descent.  Fortunately, most of our rescue dogs are adoptable after veterinary and foster care.

Our goal is to rehome them, generally to the mainland United States. Some go directly to their forever home. Others go to Stateside rescue partners that work to find the perfect home for each special-needs dog. A few may remain Sanctuary residents forever.

Because full-time veterinary care is not available on Vieques, we work with several veterinarians and veterinary clinics on the main island who accept and treat our rescues at a reasonable cost, payable in installments. Our policy is that we do not start a procedure unless over 50 percent of the funds are in hand.
